Having just read Gary Hamel’s latest book What Matters Now: How to Win in a World of Relentless Change, Ferocious Competition and Unstoppable Innovation, I’m reminded about how our sources of power in the workplace are changing. In 1959, French and Raven described the sources as from the position itself, the ability to reward, the ability to coerce through punishment, from expert skills and knowledge, and the person’s right to respect. Added later were the ability to control Resources and power through Connections.

In 21st century organisations, with information only a keyboard stoke away, the power of knowledge through information is eroding. As the need for collaboration and hence Power through connections rises.

Further, Hamel reminds us that we owe our present prosperity and our future to innovation . Those people who can look through ‘what is’ to the possibilities others miss can dramatically improve a company’s performance. While difficult to manage through their challenge to traditional practices, they are your key to your future. Is it now time for the recognition and rise of ‘innovation power?’
